Saudi Arabia and UAE lead social media conversation on Pokémon Go

Augmented reality mobile game app, Pokémon Go, has become a viral sensation in the GCC even before its official launch. Meltwater, a global media intelligence company, has been tracking the conversations surrounding Pokémon Go on social media in the GCC.

Saudi being one of the region’s most active in terms of smartphone usage and social media, topped the chatter on Pokémon Go, with over 51% mentions, followed by UAE at 25%, Kuwait at 10%, Qatar & Bahrain at 5%, and Oman at 4%.

An analysis of the comments on social media, show that the highest amount of the conversations- 58.7%, took place on Twitter; and during mid-July, it peaked to 13.9%. 

Adele Coelho, Head of Marketing at Meltwater India, Middle East & Africa, says: “This is an example of the power of analysing social media conversations at scale. In this case, Niantic can dig into which countries have the most positive social buzz around Pokémon GO and decide where to launch next.” 

The keywords used for this search were: “pokemon go”, PokemonGO, TigerMask, #بيكاتشو, “بوكيمون كو”, “بوكيمون جو”, البوكيمون, “بوكيمون قو”, “and  النمر المقنع”.
