Lost in the talk about the blunder that concluded last night’s Academy Awards is the unprecedented success streaming giants Amazon and Netflix enjoyed at the ceremony.
Amazon was the big winner, with its “Manchester by the Sea” taking home best original screenplay and best lead actor, and Iran’s “The Salesman” winning best foreign-language film.
Netlix had a far more modest night, with “The White Helmets” winning best documentary short.
Some believe that Amazon’s willingness to cooperate with the movie theater industry is what has separated it from Netflix in the eyes of the Academy.
