Donohoe has led our digital presence as Head of Product since 2019
Michael Donohoe, a digital media veteran who has served as the Head of Product since August 2019, has been promoted to Chief Product Officer.
Michael is a rare leader: as effective in a two-person pre-launch startup as he is running an award-winning team of developers, designers and product managers. As Head of Product, Michael built Rest of World’s digital presence from the ground up, fiercely devoted to building reader experiences that were fast, innovative and accessible to our global audience. He ensured that every person written about by Rest of World could read Rest of World, no matter where they were or how much their data access cost.
Over time, Michael built our reputation as a visually bold and experimental news organization, spearheading immersive story initiatives that won numerous journalism and design awards. And he brought the same gusto to the less glamorous but critical backend of Rest of World: an inveterate tinkerer, Michael could often be found solving for small improvements on internal technical elements in his downtime, just because he knew it might serve our readers that much better.
As Chief Product Officer, Michael will lead our Product and Design team to even greater heights in 2024, with more ambitious visual storytelling and surprises ahead.
Before joining Rest of World, Michael helped launch business publication Quartz as its Director of Product and Engineering. He spent eight years at The New York Times on the product side and later led the redesign of The New Yorker’s digital presence and paywall.
